About KESCA

Join the movement for higher standards around kitchen indoor air quality and fire safety.

KESCA (Kitchen Exhaust Systems Cleaners Association) is a Non-Profit Organization based in Ottawa, Canada. Our aim is to ensure that all commercial kitchens and businesses are safe, clean, and energy efficient because certain activities can affect indoor air quality, which may have an
impact on your health. We’ll achieve this together through a strong unified program advocating for improved education, maintenance and certification programs around kitchen indoor air quality.

Here's why what we do is important!

Health Impact

Poor air quality can contribute to both short and long-term negative health effects. From respiratory illness to heart problems, indoor air contaminates are dangerous. Health Canada advise that children, pregnant women and the elderly are particularly vulnerable. Does that concern you? The chances are you’re reading this thinking ‘someone in my family could be at risk’. Which is a scary thought. The effects may not always be clear for a while. They may be developing problems without knowing it. That’s why it’s vital you act fast in supporting the movement for better indoor air quality.

The Numbers

There are over 200,000 restaurants available to the public in Canada. Yet less than 100 kitchen exhaust cleaning contractors in the industry. So on average that’s around 2,000 potential customers for each contractor. 5000+ restaurants available to the public in the Ottawa/Gatineau area. But, at present, only around 1000 are able to meet the NFPA 96 standards. Food for thought… We believe everyone is entitled to the best indoor air quality and these figures simply aren’t good enough. Our members will work together so that all restaurants meet KESCA and NFPA 96 standards.

Public Citizens

Choosing a KESCA certified restaurant, hotel etc. from our list of certified businesses is the obvious decision. By favouring businesses that care about your health, you force the hands of the rest. That way we end up with a clean, safe indoor environment everywhere. You might want to create a petition or write to your MP to make KESCA standards part of the law. You may decide to train and become a KESCA contractor so you can help directly. Even spreading our messages about the importance of clean air and fire safety can aid the cause. Whatever you choose to do, you can be the heroes for our cause!

Business Owners

It’s important that your staff and customers are in the best health.

You don’t want to be short-staffed or encounter legal issues due to illnesses you could prevent.

Making sure your kitchen is KESCA certified, as soon as possible, will help reduce those worries.

Then you can focus on the exciting stuff: running a successful business and making money.

Speaking of making money…

There’s also the potential for an increase in revenue.

Your customers will see that you care about their health and the air they breathe.

That builds trust, which is crucial when it comes to customers returning to your business time and time again.

They might even tell their friends about their favourite restaurant and bring you more customers!
