FAQ

What is a Kitchen Exhaust System?

An exhaust hood, extractor hood, or range hood is a device containing a mechanical fan that hangs above the stove or cooktop in the kitchen. It removes airborne grease, combustion products, fumes, smoke, odors, heat, and steam from the air by evacuation of the air and filtration.

Why does this need to be cleaned weekly?

The NFPA 96 Standard for ventilation controls and Fire Protection Cooking Operations 2001 Edition states: “Kitchen exhaust filters are recommended to be cleaned once a week. Restaurant mesh filters are not to be used.” This prevents fires and provides clean air, water, equipment and environment.

Why should you become licensed contractors?

Becoming licensed is a simple process. Once you’ve completed the course, you can do the work in accordance to the standards learned and increase your customer base. Only licensed contractor’s work will be recognized by fire, health, building and insurance inspectors. We want to verify this work is up to standards since it is your liability insurance that will cover the cost if not performed according to the guidelines. This can result in a violation, a license being suspended, insurance canceled, and, possible, fines from various departments.  With a KESCA licensed contractor, businesses can be guaranteed that the work performed is in accordance to the guidelines.

Why become a member?

Restaurant owners and staff members can take the cleaning course, or they can hire an inspector that is licensed by KESCA to visit their location. They do not have to hire a KESCA member to clean their exhaust system however they do need to have a licensed member inspect their system twice a year.
